From Danny Ing, managing director Datum Connect and Cinch Web
At the recent launch of Kagi Jewellery’s new range, I learned a valuable business lesson from the cast and crew of Shortland Street.
They told me they work 50 hours a week because the whole unit is focused on the ‘absolute’ of achieving 23 minutes of film every single day, no matter how long it took. That made me think about what Datum Connect’s 23 minutes might be... And how we can measure if the day has been productive.
For the Shortland Street crew it goes deeper than just 23 minutes of film; it’s actually part of their culture and a unified focus for the whole ‘business’.
Here at Datum Connect we’ve begun implementing our own ’23 minute culture’, by asking ourselves what five things must we tick off, every single day, to achieve the kind of successful day we can feel satisfied about.
The old pattern is that we only do one or two important things a day, before the ‘urgent’ stuff consumes us. For me, marketing often gets put off because it’s not urgent... but it is important. Not only that, depending on our personality and our role, we gravitate towards certain tasks and ignore more important ones.
I know that business is complex and not always as measureable as Shortland Street’s 23 minutes, but... ask yourself what are the top five important things you should tick off every day, and then go do them.
Best wishes,
Danny
